Add hand-drawn designs into the mix and concerns arise that the item will be too impractical and therefore poor value for money.

In fact, though, our hand-painted silk scarves for women and hand-dyed shawls are very easy to care for and a stunning addition to any lady’s wardrobe.

As with any item worn around the body, silk scarves and shawls should be cleaned regularly to get rid of stains, fragrance residue, and airborne contaminants that can affect the look and feel of the material. Washing not only refreshes colors, giving them a new lease of life, but also gets rid of odors that can stick to any type of fabric. Far from shortening the life of the item, it keeps it in top condition so that your precious and one-of-a-kind scarf or shawl will continue to provide value for many years. Here are some quick and easy tips to keep in mind to extend the life of your wearable canvas.

1. Hand wash the item. The dry cleaning process uses harsh chemicals that can not only have a negative effect on the silk material, but also affect the colors and dyes used to create unique designs on a hand-painted or hand-dyed scarf or shawl. The agitation and rapid temperature changes that machine-washed garments are exposed to can damage hand-dyed or dyed silk. Hand washing is quick, effective, and safe, and also, of course, cost-effective. Use lukewarm water instead of hot water and always make sure to use a gentle cleanser or better yet, use a soft baby soap or shampoo. The nature of the material should be sufficient to even remove stains, but it is important not to rub the material vigorously as this may cause the stain to appear worn. Ordinary household table salt, when added to the soapy water solution, will prevent the colors on the item from bleeding, but never, under any circumstances, should bleach be used.

2. Add vinegar while rinsing. Once you have washed your silk scarf or shawl, you will then need to rinse it in cool, clear water, making sure not to wring it during the process. After all the soap has been removed, rinse it again, but this time add some kitchen vinegar to the water. Not only will this neutralize the soap, but it will also lighten the texture and restore its natural shine. Finally, rinse it again in cool, clear water to remove the vinegar, being careful not to create any odor.

3. Use clean towels to dry the scarf or shawl. Silk should never be squeezed as this can cause it to stretch and warp. Instead, lay the scarf or shawl flat on a clean, dry towel and roll it up. This will effectively squeeze out the excess water without causing any damage. Once you’re done, place the scarf or shawl on another dry towel and allow it to air dry.

4. Iron carefully. When it comes to ironing a silk scarf or shawl, it’s always best to work on the back of the fabric, but make sure the iron is on its lowest setting. Alternatively, you can use a slightly higher setting, but place the item under a clean cotton cloth or towel so it doesn’t come into direct contact with the heat.

Hand-painted silk scarves and shawls are a joy to own, and by following these simple steps, your shawls and scarves will give you enjoyment for many years.

Since silk is such a fine and delicate material, many people think that it is not durable at all and is very difficult to take care of.
